Involve everyone in creating change

Facilitation

Facilitation is the art of hosting purposeful and inclusive group conversations which unleash the creativity and energy of the whole group

It creates a productive, safe and structured space for ambitious conversations, producing clear plans and shared commitment.

I offer one-off or regular facilitation for a wide range of scenarios, groups and purposes, both face-to-face and online.

She creates a safe space, makes sure everyone can contribute

Typical sessions include

Strategy Away Days

Is it time for your Board, team, or whole staff to take a step back and look at the big picture? I’ll help you to reflect, take stock of the external context in which you work and prepare for the future.

Team Development Days

Want to take your work to the next level? Team development days give you the space and tools to reflect on your performance as a team, improve relationships, build motivation – and create impact.

Stakeholder Consultations

Need a bigger conversation to shape plans and engage stakeholders? I can help you build understanding with internal and external groups, to generate useful contributions and commitment.

The Steps

Clarifying your goals
We’ll kick off with a briefing to clarify what your group wants to achieve; what you need from a facilitator; time available; who might attend; and how best to share any information before and during and after the event.

Designing your session
Online meetings, major consultation events, small team strategy reviews or annual Board away days – each event takes a different format and has its own style, so every session is bespoke. I draw on a wide range of facilitation tools, often including ‘visual thinking’ techniques, to inspire lively, focussed and inclusive conversations. Your session will tailored to suit the group size, purpose and tone of the event. I’ll share a draft agenda and plan with you to make sure it meets your aims.

Hosting a conversation that gets to the heart of the matter
I’ll liaise with you to ensure the practical details, including any access issues, are carefully managed. On the day, I chair the conversations according to the brief we’ve agreed, adapting to the group’s needs and making sure conversations are open, imaginative, solutions-focussed and rigorous so you get the outcomes you need.

TESTIMONIALS

What others say

Claire’s experience as a facilitator made the transfer to on-line group meetings feel seamless for the Creative People and Places National Peer Learning Advisory Group. She creates a safe space, makes sure everyone can contribute and uses a range of techniques which support groups to make decisions.  She asks perceptive questions and checks what we want to achieve with the time.  She understands the ‘big picture’ context of our work and is also attentive to the details that enable people to play an active role in the meetings.

CASE STUDY

Artists Rooms

The Results

A number of viable options to improve collections and loans processes

Renewed excitement about the programme and commitment to improving impact

Improved inter-organisational relationships to further discussions after the event

The Challenge

ARTISTS ROOMS is a partnership of National Galleries of Scotland and Tate. A small core staff team work remotely with collections colleagues across both institutions. The programme is ambitious; lending technically and artistically complex work to largely first-time borrowers which need support to meeting loan conditions. The aim of the awayday was to provide a space for this virtual team to generate solutions around condition reporting, storage, packing and conservation information and build relationships that would enable further collaboration after the session ended.

I designed and facilitated a lively away day including opportunities for colleagues to get to know one another better; share perspectives about the challenges and opportunities and creatively generate fresh ideas to improve practice and impact. The day included short presentations from the senior leaders and a series of break out groups working on different issues the group wanted to progress: each facilitated by a staff member who took responsibility to follow-up actions after the day. Participants could choose which task groups they joined, ensuring they could contribute fully. The session was held at York Art Gallery (a mid-point for staff based in Edinburgh and London) and over the lunch break we arranged a talk by the resident curator to help the team hear first-hand about the changing context of the regional museums they work with.
