The Stages

Understanding your context
We discuss your group’s needs and identify the modules or courses to suit your goals, or discuss a bespoke session. We clarify the learning outcomes, content and format for the training including location; session length; group size; programme design; and learning resources (for longer courses).

Designing an impactful learning experience
Each course supports your group to work at its best by developing skills, self-awareness and confidence. The emphasis is on practical application: sharing simple and effective tools, skills, techniques and theories that can be used immediately in the workplace. Sessions are based on ‘brain-friendly learning’ principles and involve a mixture of formats including games, quizzes, presentations and scenarios. High-quality materials support learning during and after each session, with handouts or workbooks provided.

Creating learning that lasts
Training should be relevant, high-quality and immediately applicable. I make sure every participant is clear about what they want to learn, and adapt the content to meet their needs. I build on what people already know, growing their confidence and encouraging peer-to-peer learning, with many participants continuing to support each another beyond the course as a result. Interactive sessions encourage trainees to explore real-life examples, making it easy to apply their learning straight away in the workplace.

The Challenge

Museum Development Yorkshire is a virtual team of seven mainly part-time staff offering development support to smaller museums across England’s largest region. I worked with MDY over a year to support the team to work together more effectively, balancing autonomy and collaboration. Through a series of facilitated quarterly review meetings, alongside individual behavioural assessments, the project aimed to enable staff to reflect on and improve their performance as individuals and as a team, improving the impact of the service.

The backbone of the project were four quarterly meetings which each provided a safe and productive space to review recent team performance and identify practical steps to improve impact in future. I facilitated these conversations in a way that built trust among the team and equally developed their confidence to lead their own self-assessments using simple but effective tools and techniques such as Troika Consulting and the 4Fs review. Each session also included an aspect of training to develop team skills including Belbin team roles, giving feedback and difficult conversations. Alongside the quarterly sessions, working with co-trainer Isabel Mortimer, I delivered a four-day leadership and coaching training programme for the staff to develop new skills and approaches for their client work. The final quarterly review session took place online in late May 2020, enabling the team to reflect on a period at the start of the national LockDown when they had adapted successfully to a rapidly changing and very difficult operating context for their clients.
